Hollie Aardema

LMSW, CAADC

I work closely with my clients to explore any underlying unhelpful thoughts that lead to difficulties, and to challenge and change these thoughts so you can start to feel better and begin living again.  I have worked with clients struggling with mental health and substance use in urban and rural settings, in homes, jails, hospitals and nursing homes. I am trained in Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Dialectical Behavioral Therapy and am beginning training for EMDR.  No matter what you are going through, know that I am here to listen, support and help you figure it out. Every day is a new opportunity to start over again!

Over the past forty years I have aided a number of individuals in overcoming a variety of behavioral and thought disorders.  The issues I have helped clients deal with include substance abuse, depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, marital issues, child rearing issues, trauma, and life guidance.  My philosophy of care is that everyone has issues which require attention sometime in their lives.  The intensity and timing are the only variables that change from person to person.  Overcoming our issues has a cumulative positive benefit in our lives and in the lives of those who care for and about us.  It is my true belief that a good match with a therapist with whom you are comfortable is vital in order to overcome our particular issues.  I will work to understand you and why you have chosen your particular behaviors and thinking processes while always valuing your uniqueness.

I especially enjoy working with women broadly on empowerment issues in the areas of emotional coping, stress management and self care, trauma, addictions, self esteem, and functioning healthily in relationships. I have experience working with women who struggle with eating disorders, childhood abuse and abuse in adult relationships, postpartum depression, major depression, and anxiety disorders. I have lengthy experience in treating men and women with substance abuse and dependence issues individually and in groups using a number of approaches.  Life-long recovery from all disorders means developing a recovery-oriented lifestyle and increase in quality of life. My goal and intention is to assist and support this.

Hope M. Brookens

MA, LPC, CAADC

Over the last 15 years I have worked in a variety of settings including in homes with families for infant mental health services, in a psychiatric hospital, in outpatient substance use and mental health services, and in the criminal justice setting. This has resulted in helping with a wide range of issues in the behavioral health field. I believe that each client deserves services that meet them where they are ready to begin and that are tailored to his or her therapy needs. Everyone struggles at some point in life and behavioral or thinking issues are not to be viewed as a “sickness.” Rather, recognizing the struggle and working through it to develop healthier behaviors that helps the individual move forward in life is not only productive, but empowering.

I tackle things in a fairly direct manner but at a speed that is sensitive to each clients’ need. I believe that thoughts, emotions and actions work together, with each one impacting the other. To begin making differences in how things turn out, the cycle needs to be disrupted and replaced with healthier thoughts and skills.

Very few people emerge out of their families of origin emotionally whole and mature.  My passion is to help individuals become the best version of themselves, both emotionally and spiritually.  My desire for clients is that the therapy process provides them with a safe and nurturing environment to discover their uniqueness and worth, affirming their strengths and giving them skills and tools to respond to the many challenges of life.

As a therapist, I am your guide in helping you acknowledge and address the messages, problems, concerns, and stories that are inhibiting your path to embracing your goodness. My goal is to use the therapy process to help you acknowledge the issues, recognize the goodness within yourself, and take responsibility for the journey towards your healing.
My understanding of counseling comes from Person-Centered, Narrative, Solution Focused, Developmental and Attachment-based Therapy. I have training and experience in the US and in India and in helping individuals and couples from diverse backgrounds with relationship and parenting issues, substance abuse, identity, depression and severe mental illness.
